PARKS

HEIN PARK
Hein Park is bordered by Bridge Street on the east and Main Street on the west,
offers playground equipment, outdoor barbecue grills, an open air shelter and a
river deck. The Grand River flows through the park, making it a scenic spot in
which to bring the family for and afternoon or evening of relaxation. The park
also offers rest room
facilities.

Green Lake County has a direct connection with the famous sculptor, E. M.
Viquesney of Spencer, Indiana. He designed and copyrighted a sculpture titled
"The Spirit of the American Doughboy." There were at least 136
Viquesney
Doughboy statues placed in 35 states, 6 of them being in the State of Wisconsin,
Appleton, Fort Atkinson, Janesville, Peshtigo, West Bend, and one of these famous statues resides in Markesan' Hein Park. This statue reminds
all who see it of our men and women who proudly served their country in the
armed forces.

This six-and-one-half foot statue is a World War I infantryman advancing
through No Man's Land, through stumps and barbed wire entanglements, his rifle
held in his left hand while his right hand is raised high, holding a grenade.
No one is sure how August Hein secured the statue that he erected in 1946,
but in 1996 the statue was examined for the Smithsonian Registry of Public
Sculpture in America, picture and reports were published in the book Public
Sculpture in Wisconsin in 1998, an atlas of outdoor monuments, memorials, and
masterpieces in the Badger State.

home to the June Dairy Days Volleyball Tournament. Two sand volleyball courts
are open to the public as well as shuffleboard and horseshoe courts. Swings and
slides are in the park and rest rooms are available. The Markesan Kiwanis Club
maintains the park and during the winter months, provides a skating rink for

Soldiers and Sailors Park is located north of Markesan on Little Green Lake.
This park is the location of Markesan's Fourth of July celebration and the Pork
Roast and Kids' Fisheree later in July. These events are sponsored by the
Markesan Lions Club who also maintain the park. Arborists have commented on the
age of the trees on the grounds, dating them to the early to mid 1800's.
Picnickers at the park may enjoy the outdoor barbecue grills, and in the event
of inclement weather may use the shelter house. Two lighted volleyball courts.
play ground equipment and rest rooms are available for the public.
The sandy beach is an ideal spot to get a tan, build a sand castle, day dream,
wade along the edge of the water or dive right into Little Green for a
refreshing swim.
