The Markesan Public Library has served area residents in its present location at
75 North Bridge Street since 1930. Having its beginning in an upstairs downtown
building, residents soon felt it was time to construct a House for Books. Since
that time, two renovations have enlarged the structure to accommodate the
expanding collection and increased circulation. When handwritten record keeping
was once the norm, today computer technology offers patrons services not yet on
the horizon when the library was first dedicated. The library has an interesting
history, complete with persons and organizations that have contributed to make
the library what it is today.
The Library is handicapped accessible and has plenty of room for reading and
browsing. Free internet use is available, including wireless access. A small fee
is charged for copy and fax services. A microfilm reader/printer is available
for the local newspaper on microfilm, which goes back to 1908. For movie buffs,
a video and DVD collection is provided, as well as books on tape and music CD's.
Magazines and newspapers are also offered in addition to the book collection.
Book discussion groups meet throughout the year. A Summer Library Program is
provided for area children. During the Fall through Spring months, a story time
for tots is very popular. Used book sales are planned at different times
throughout the year.
The Library continues consecutive record breaking years for Library circulation.
The Markesan Public Library is a member of the Winnefox Library System. This
allows Library users access to the material of over thirty public libraries from
five counties.
