General Garage Building
Requirements
Residential Detached Garages
1. A
detached private garage shall not occupy more than 900 square feet of
area.
2.
Cannot project past the front yard setback of the principal building.
3. No
detached private garage shall be constructed on a residential lot until
a principal structure is present or under construction.
4.
Detached private garages shall have a side yard and back yard setback of
three (3) feet from the overhang to the property line.
5.
Detached private garages shall be separated from the principal building
by not less than three (3) feet.
6.
Detached private garages shall not occupy more than 30% of the required
area for the rear yard.
7.
Cannot exceed 16 feet in height.
8. Must
comply with all restrictions and requirements of the Wisconsin Uniform
Dwelling Code.
9.
Building Permit Fee is $35.00 (additional charges may be incurred for
electrical permits, heating permits, etc.).
10.Other
requirements may apply, and in no way should it be assumed that these
requirements are inclusive of all requirements that must be adhered to
in your building project. The requirements listed here are only meant
to serve as a basic guide and do not include all requirements. Always

Residential
Attached Garages
1. The
garage must meet the same setbacks, side yards and rearwards, as
principal buildings, which is: front yard 25 feet minimum, side yard 8
feet minimum, and rearward 35 feet minimum. Corner lots are considered
to have two (2) front setbacks, one (1) side yard setback, and one (1)
rearward setback.
2. An
attached private garage shall not occupy more than 1200 square feet of
area with a maximum of three (3) overhead doors.
3.
Cannot exceed 35 feet in height.
4. Must
meet code requirements for construction standards and requirements and
restrictions of the Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code.
5. Must
be wired according to the State and National Electrical Code.
6.
Building Permit Fee is $7.00 per 100 sq. ft.

NOTE:
In
both types, a scaled plot plan showing the lot size, location, proposed
building, dimensions, setbacks, etc. must be filed in order to secure a
Building Permit.
No
floor drains are allowed unless in conformance with the Plumbing Code
which does not allow a barrel to be buried for drainage.
In both types, if
the garage is heated, the heating unit must be listed and approved for
garage use. |
