The City of Markesan has general elections in compliance with state and federal statutes on the first Tuesday in April and November.  Elections take place at the Community Room of the Markesan City Hall, 150 S. Bridge Street, Markesan.  The polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.  The State of Wisconsin now requires voter registration.  You will save time at the polls on election day by registering at City Hall prior to elections.

VOTER REGISTRATION

Voter registration is required in the City of Markesan before an elector is allowed to vote.  A qualified elector is a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age, having resided in the election district for at least 10 days before the election, and does not have any impediment to voting.  Military absentee voters are not required to be registered in order to vote.

An elector can register in person in the office of the Clerk-Treasurer, at the polling place on election day, or by mail.  Please call the Clerk’s Office at 920-398-3031 for information.

Proof of Residence

Proof of residence is required when registering in the Clerk’s Office and at the polling place on election day.

Only one form of acceptable proof of residence is required to register to vote.  An acceptable form of identification includes a current and complete name and residential address.  Examples of forms of acceptable proof of residence include:

n        A Wisconsin Driver’s License

n       A Wisconsin Identification Card

n       Other Identification Card or License issued by a Wisconsin governmental body

n       A Real Estate Tax bill or receipt for the current year before the election

n       A residential lease which is effective for the period that includes the election

n       Or, a gas, electric or telephone service statement for the period not earlier than 90 days before the election

When an applicant cannot provide an acceptable proof of residence, one other elector of the municipality who has acceptable proof of residence may substantiate the information on the form.

VOTING BY ABSENTEE BALLOT

Any qualified elector may request to vote by absentee ballot.  A qualified voter is any U.S. citizen who will be 18 years of age or older on election day and who has resided in the district or municipality where he or she wishes to vote for at least 10 days before the election.  The elector must also be registered.

TO RECEIVE AN ABSENTEE BALLOT YOU MUST MAKE YOUR REQUEST IN WRITING.

Contact the City Clerk and request that an application for an absentee ballot be sent to you for the primary or general election, or both.  Your request must list your voting address within the municipality where you wish to vote, the address where the absentee ballot should be sent, if different, and your signature.

Special absentee voting application provisions apply to electors who are indefinitely confined at home or a care facility, in the military, or serving as a sequestered juror.  If any of these conditions apply to you, contact the Clerk’s Office.

You may also come to the Clerk’s Office, complete the written application, and vote by absentee ballot.

The deadline for making an application to vote absentee is 4:00 p.m. the Friday before the election.

The deadline for voting an absentee ballot in the Clerk’s Office is 4:00 p.m. the day before the election.

No absentee ballot can be hand-carried outside of City Hall.  You also may not “pick-up” an absentee ballot for anyone else and take it to them, unless you are acting as an agent for a hospitalized elector.

All voted ballots must be returned to the Clerk’s Office before the polls close on election day.

Any ballots received after the polls close will not be counted.

An elector may receive an absentee ballot by fax.  Please contact the City Clerk at (920)398-3031 for instructions.
