The City of Markesan has
general elections in compliance with state and federal statutes on the
first Tuesday in April and November. Elections take place at the
Community Room of the Markesan City Hall, 150 S. Bridge Street,
Markesan. The polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. The State of
Wisconsin now requires voter registration. You will save time at the
polls on election day by registering at City Hall prior to elections.
VOTER REGISTRATION
Voter registration is
required in the City of Markesan before an elector is allowed to vote.
A qualified elector is a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age, having
resided in the election district for at least 10 days before the
election, and does not have any impediment to voting. Military absentee
voters are not required to be registered in order to vote.
An elector can register
in person in the office of the Clerk-Treasurer, at the polling place on
election day, or by mail. Please call the Clerk’s Office at
920-398-3031 for information.
Proof of Residence
Proof of residence is
required when registering in the Clerk’s Office and at the polling place
on election day.
Only one form of
acceptable proof of residence is required to register to vote. An
acceptable form of identification includes a current and complete name
and residential address. Examples of forms of acceptable proof of
residence include:

A Wisconsin Driver’s License
n
A Wisconsin Identification Card
n
Other Identification Card or License issued by a Wisconsin
governmental body
n
A Real Estate Tax bill or receipt for the current year before the
election
n
A residential lease which is effective for the period that
includes the election
n
Or, a gas, electric or telephone service statement for the period
not earlier than 90 days before the election
When an applicant
cannot provide an acceptable proof of residence, one other elector of
the municipality who has acceptable proof of residence may substantiate
the information on the
form.
VOTING BY ABSENTEE BALLOT
Any qualified elector
may request to vote by absentee ballot. A qualified voter is any U.S.
citizen who will be 18 years of age or older on election day and who has
resided in the district or municipality where he or she wishes to vote
for at least 10 days before the election. The elector must also be
registered.
TO RECEIVE AN
ABSENTEE BALLOT YOU MUST MAKE YOUR REQUEST IN WRITING.
Contact the City Clerk
and request that an application for an absentee ballot be sent to you
for the primary or general election, or both. Your request must list
your voting address within the municipality where you wish to vote, the
address where the absentee ballot should be sent, if different, and your
signature.
Special absentee voting
application provisions apply to electors who are indefinitely confined
at home or a care facility, in the military, or serving as a sequestered
juror. If any of these conditions apply to you, contact the Clerk’s
Office.
You may also come to the
Clerk’s Office, complete the written application, and vote by absentee
ballot.
The deadline for making
an application to vote absentee is 4:00 p.m. the Friday before the
election.
The deadline for voting
an absentee ballot in the Clerk’s Office is 4:00 p.m. the day before the
election.
No absentee ballot can
be hand-carried outside of City Hall. You also may not “pick-up” an
absentee ballot for anyone else and take it to them, unless you are
acting as an agent for a hospitalized elector.
All voted ballots must
be returned to the Clerk’s Office before the polls close on election
day.
Any ballots received
after the polls close will not be counted.

an absentee ballot by fax. Please contact the City Clerk at
